Gold panning remains a popular and relaxing way to find smaller nuggets of gold and flake in Alaska. Back in the early days of the gold rush, serious prospectors discovered that gold mining could be done more quickly and efficiently by automating the process, using a machine called a „dredge“. On Prospector John’s Dredge & Raft Trip, you’ll visit a working gold dredge and try your hand at gold mining by extracting large volumes of sediment from the river. You will then clean out the sluice and pan out the concentrates which you will pan out and discover how much gold you have found....
After your tour of the dredge, you’ll board our fully-outfitted river rafts for scenic Kenai River float, then return to your vehicle upon docking at Jim’s Landing.
What to bring/how to dress
Alaskan rivers are cool. We suggest you dress in layers, topped by a long sleeved shirt, long pants, as well as a jacket. Fleece jackets tend to work best. Remember you can always remove extra clothing if you get too warm! If you who wish to keep your hands warm and dry while you pan for gold, we suggest a pair of rubber gloves. You are welcome and encouraged to bring a small day pack with an extra pair of dry socks, a pair of dry gloves (not rubber), and insect repellant.
Will I find gold?
Everyone has an equal chance of finding color. Most finds will be in the form of gold flake, but small nuggets have been panned by a few lucky and sharp-eyed prospectors. Should you find gold, a vial will be provided. You can expect to be amazed by the sheer beauty of the Kenai river and the wilderness we will be prospecting in.
Age/fitness requirements
Prospectors ranging in ages from 6 to 89 have enjoyed this exclusive Alaskan backcountry prospecting trip. As long as you’re be fit enough to walk a ½ mile and climb a flight of stairs, you should be fine. Be sure to talk to a Prospector John’s employee if you have special concerns.
Does the trip ever cancel due to weather?
Nope! Like the U.S. Post Office, our trips run rain or shine.
