GUIDED KENAI RIVER FLOAT DETAILS:

The three hour guided rafting trips are the adventure of a lifetime for all ages, from youngsters to seniors. Float down the Kenai River with an in-depth look at the history of the area, scenery and Alaskan wildlife. The float ventures into the National Wildlife Refuge where we often spot bear, moose and bald eagles on the river's edge and, looking to the higher altitudes with the aid of binoculars, Dahl Sheep and mountain goats. Rafts float past the confluence of the Russian River as it flows into and joins the Kenai River.  When the salmon are running thick you will witness world famous combat fishing as you float past hundreds of fishermen doing the "Kenai flip," angling mostly for Sockeye Salmon but also Coho Salmon as fish in the millions make their way upriver to spawn.  The beauty of the glacial waters, snow-capped mountains, lushness of the area, and the wildlife leave one awestruck.  Rubber boots and wet weather gear provided as well as U.S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices.  If you have your own knee high boots and wet weather gear and prefer to wear those, we encourage you to do so.  If the weather looks to be chilly, bringing a jacket, hat and gloves is encouraged.  Binoculars, water, and snacks never hurt!  Vans will be waiting for you at Jim's Landing to transport you back to your vehicle.

Seriously searching for gold!

Gold panning remains a popular and relaxing way to find smaller nuggets of gold and flake in Alaska. Back in the early days of the gold rush, serious prospectors discovered that gold mining could be done more quickly and efficiently by automating the process, using a machine called a „dredge“. On Prospector John’s Dredge & Raft Trip, you’ll visit a working gold dredge and try your hand at gold mining by extracting large volumes of sediment from the river.  You will then clean out the sluice and pan out the concentrates which you will pan out and discover how much gold you have found....

After your tour of the dredge, you’ll board our fully-outfitted river rafts for scenic Kenai River float, then return to your vehicle upon docking at Jim’s Landing.

    What to bring/how to dress

Alaskan rivers are cool. We suggest you dress in layers, topped by a long sleeved shirt, long pants, as well as a jacket. Fleece jackets tend to work best. Remember you can always remove extra clothing if you get too warm! If you who wish to keep your hands warm and dry while you pan for gold, we suggest a pair of rubber gloves. You are welcome and encouraged to bring a small day pack with an extra pair of dry socks, a pair of dry gloves (not rubber), and insect repellant.

    Will I find gold?

Everyone has an equal chance of finding color. Most finds will be in the form of gold flake, but small nuggets have been panned by a few lucky and sharp-eyed prospectors. Should you find gold, a vial will be provided. You can expect to be amazed by the sheer beauty of the Kenai river and the wilderness we will be prospecting in.
