Kenai River Adventure (Gold N' Raft):
Full Day Rafting, Hiking, Prospecting, Sluicing
If leisurely rafting the Kenai River, bushwacking into Prospector John's "Bear Den" Claim, and prospecting for gold using a sluice, calls to you, book our Gold N' Raft Adventure.
Raft the turquoise blue glacial waters of the Upper Kenai River passing through the Kenai Wildlife Refuge and hike approximately 1/2 mile through the woods and brush to a remote streambed rich with gold. Your knowledgeable mining guide will teach you time-tested methods for identifying high potential gravel ore. Then the fun and work begin as you dig and wrest ore from the earth filling buckets as time permits. Next, separate the gravel, larger rocks and pebbles from the "gold concentrates," (sand, silt and gold), using a sluice and the stream's current. The gold concentrates, consisting of heavier and smaller materials, collect in the sluice's mining carpet. Next "clean out" your sluice, transferring the concentrates to a gold pan. Pan your concentrates to reveal the fruit of your efforts, gold, and shout "Eureka!" KEEP THE GOLD YOU FIND!
After prospecting for a few hours, you will follow your trail back to the pick-up spot, reboard rafts and continue a scenic float, soaking in the majestic beauty of the mountains. Be on the lookout for Bald Eagles, bear, moose, Merganser, porcupine and other critters.
FUN for all ages, young to old. Families, couples, friends, coworkers and singles work as a team, quickly bonding as the hunt for gold grabs hold! Learn much from our seasoned miners and make great memories and new friends! Legitimately boast "I discovered gold in the Alaska wilderness!"
PREPARING FOR YOUR MINING ADVENTURE: Dress in layers. Bring water, snacks, insect repellant, binoculars, hats, gloves, and rain gear, and wear two pairs of socks, and/or extra-warm socks. We will provide hip waders; you are welcome to wear your own if you prefer. PLEASE CALL TWO OR THREE DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR TOUR DATE REGARDING MEET-UP DETAILS.
